Writing wedding vows can be tough, but it’s also a chance to share your feelings and make promises to your partner that are deeply personal. If you’re stuck and don’t know where to start, don’t worry! I’ve put together 50 wedding vow prompts to help you get those creative juices flowing. These prompts are designed to be simple and straightforward, making it easier for you to express what’s truly in your heart.
How to Write Your Wedding Vows
First: Let’s go into how to even begin writing your vows! Figuring out what to say and how to say it can be a difficult thing when planning on writing your own wedding vows. How do you condense years of your love story into only a few minutes? How do you know what to include so your partner will feel as loved, cherished, and appreciated as possible on your wedding day?
Although it may be challenging, writing your own wedding vows will make your vow exchange more meaningful and special than the traditional wedding vow. If you are at all considering the idea of writing your own vows, here are three things to think about and keep in mind.
Brainstorm early
If possible, you’ll want to start thinking about what you’re going to say multiple weeks before you actually say it. Spend a few mornings journaling about what you want to say in a few short minutes.
Letting your ideas develop and build over time will give you a better grasp and handle on what you truly want to express, which will make it easier to write meaningful vows when you actually sit down to do it.
Practice
Allow yourself time to edit and practice your vows as well. Practicing your vows out loud will give you a chance to hear what they sound like, which can sometimes make a surprising difference. Also, discussing and agreeing beforehand with your partner on the tone of your wedding vows so that the vow exchange is somewhat cohesive may be a good idea.
Write words that are meaningful to your relationship
It’s usually a good idea to start out by expressing your love for the other person. Let them know how much you cherish them and the relationship you share. If there are any special ways you guys have of expressing your love to each other, consider including them to make your vows as personal as possible. Be specific in calling out the ways your partner has helped you become a better person, and the ways you have helped and benefited from each other’s company.
Sharing a couple of memories or moments that are special and sacred is always a good idea as well, or maybe you want to acknowledge a dark time within your relationship to commemorate the way you worked through it.
Be sure to also include your intentions in the future. Let your partner know your plans to be beside them throughout the ebb and flow of life. Don’t be afraid to get specific here with your promises. Vow to do both large and small things that apply to your relationship.
