Sunrise Engagement at Artist’s Palette

Meeting J and D for their engagement photoshoot at Artist’s Palette was a real treat. I first connected with this adventurous couple through a workshop organized by Basecamp Northwest. The plan was to capture their engagement photos at sunrise and then meet up again later for their elopement portraits throughout Death Valley. This engagement shoot was just the start of their full-day adventure.

Why Sunrise at Artist’s Palette?

Artist’s Palette in Death Valley National Park is a fantastic spot for engagement photos. The unique, colorful rock formations provide a striking background that you won’t find anywhere else. We chose sunrise for the shoot because it’s the best time to experience the area’s beauty. Plus, it’s much cooler in the early morning compared to the rest of the day. Spring is the perfect time to visit before the extreme heat of summer sets in.

The Early Morning Adventure

It was a bit chilly when we met up before dawn. The darkness was almost complete since there’s no light pollution out there. But as the sun began to rise, it quickly warmed us up and illuminated the landscape. Watching the colors come to life was an incredible experience, one that made the early wake-up call worth it.

Hiking and Shooting

J and D were full of energy despite the early hour. We hiked around the area, stopping along the canyon trails to capture some amazing shots. The rocky terrain and vibrant colors of the Artist’s Palette made for a perfect backdrop for this adventurous couple. Their chemistry was evident in every photo, making my job as their photographer an absolute joy.

Tips for Your Own Artist’s Palette Engagement

  1. Timing is Everything: Plan your shoot for sunrise or sunset. The light is softer, and the temperatures are more bearable.
  2. Dress in Layers: It can be quite chilly before the sun comes up, but it warms up fast. Wear layers that you can easily shed as it gets warmer.
  3. Bring Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing some hiking, so make sure you have sturdy, comfortable footwear.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Even in the cooler parts of the day, it’s important to drink plenty of water.
  5. Respect the Environment: Leave no trace. The natural beauty of Death Valley is something to be preserved.

A Memorable Experience

One thing I loved about working with J and D was how comfortable they were in nature. They were up for anything, whether it was climbing a rock for a better view or navigating a narrow trail. Their willingness to explore made for some truly memorable photos. It was clear they were having a great time, which always makes for the best pictures.
