Slot Canyon Elopement Portraits in Anza-Borrego

Planning an elopement can be an exciting adventure, especially when you’re looking to do something a little different. That’s exactly what Gaby, a fellow elopement photographer, and I had in mind when we set our sights on Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Our goal was to stage a styled slot canyon elopement that would showcase the adventurous spirit of couples who dare to think outside the box for their wedding.

The Perfect Spot: Slot Canyon Ladder Trail

Gaby had previously hiked the slot canyon ladder trail in the Mecca Hills Wilderness and immediately knew it would offer the unique backdrop we were seeking. I couldn’t agree more. To bring our vision to life, we invited E and G, a couple I had the pleasure of working with previously. They were all in and jumped at the opportunity to try something new and daring.

The day kicked off at the Painted Canyon trailhead, where E and G changed into their outfits. E went for a striking long red dress, while G chose an elegant black one. We decided on non-traditional colors to inspire other couples to consider wedding attire that truly represents them, beyond the classic white.

Navigating to the trailhead was an adventure on its own. It’s a 4.5-mile journey on unpaved Painted Canyon Road, with hard-packed sand and a few tricky spots. Despite the potential for getting stuck in softer sections, I’ve seen cars with low clearance make it without too much trouble. Just remember, there’s little to no cell service out there, so come prepared.

The Hike Experience

This backcountry hike is no walk in the park. It’s a backcountry trek that demands preparation. While there are shaded areas, the canyon can get pretty warm, and parts of the trail are fully exposed. We made sure to bring plenty of water – more than 1L each, since it can get so hot.

Also, while trekking poles are usually helpful, they’re not the best here due to the ladder climbs. Low gaiters, however, are a great idea to keep the sand out of your shoes. As for the ladders? No special gear needed.

Capturing Memories

As we ventured into the canyon, E and G’s initial nervousness transformed into excitement. They adapted quickly, moving with the grace and agility of mountain goats.

We found stunning spots between the canyon walls, bathed in natural light, perfect for capturing those intimate moments. These weren’t your typical posed shots; we were all about seizing the candid, raw emotions as we explored.

We didn’t complete the entire trail. Our plan was to catch the sunset at Font’s Point, so after a couple of hours, we headed back. It was an incredible experience, navigating through the canyons and witnessing E and G’s connection in such a unique setting.
