Stormy Skies & Love: A Joshua Tree Photo Session

Joshua Tree National Park is always an adventure, but March brings its own surprises. This time, it was dark clouds rolling in, threatening to pour at any moment. M and M had booked their Joshua Tree couple photo session in March, ready to take on whatever the desert had in store. And honestly? The moody skies made it even better.

Running from the Rain in Joshua Tree

We started our session keeping an eye on the sky. The clouds were looking dark a distance away, but we weren’t going to let that stop us. As long as we avoided being under said dark clouds, we were good to go. M and M were dressed in earthy tones—browns, blacks, and greens—which blended perfectly with the desert. If there’s one thing I always tell couples, it’s that choosing the right colors for your session can make a huge difference in how natural everything looks. They nailed it.

As we wandered through the park, we found a tucked-away spot off a less-traveled road. That’s one of my favorite things about Joshua Tree couples sessions—there’s always a hidden gem if you’re willing to explore. This one had a mix of boulders and Joshua trees, and best of all, no one else around.

Finding the Perfect Spot

When photographing couples in Joshua Tree, I always look for spots that feel a little more private. National parks can get busy, and while the main trails are great, there’s something special about having a place to yourselves. If you’re planning a Joshua Tree couple photo session in March, keep in mind that spring brings more visitors. Weekdays or sunrise/sunset sessions are usually the best for a quieter experience.

M and M moved so naturally together. That’s the beauty of choosing an adventure-style session—there’s no forced posing, just movement, laughter, and a lot of real moments. They climbed boulders, walked along the trail, and at one point, we had to pick up the pace because the storm was creeping closer.

Why Joshua Tree is Perfect for Couples Photos

Joshua Tree is one of my favorite places for couples’ sessions and elopements. It’s easy to access, has endless scenic spots, and the rock formations create some of the best natural framing for photos. Plus, March is a great time to visit—the temperatures are cooler, and you might even catch some wildflowers starting to bloom.

If you’re thinking of eloping here or planning a couples’ shoot, here are a few quick tips:

  • Check the weather. Spring storms can pop up fast, so having a flexible mindset helps.
  • Dress for the desert. Layers are key since it can be warm during the day but chilly when the sun goes down.
  • Pick your timing wisely. Sunset is always a favorite, but sunrise sessions have incredible light and way fewer people around.

Getting Ready for the Next Location

M and M changed into their second outfits—something a little more dressed up but still fitting the desert vibe. We packed up and made our way to the next location, staying ahead of the rain.

This is just part one of their session. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own Joshua Tree elopement or couples shoot, check out this guide to planning a Joshua Tree elopement or this post on the best desert elopement spots in California.
