Whether you’re into snowboarding, hiking, or just relaxing by the lake, it’s the perfect place for outdoorsy couples to say “I do.”

Best Time of Year to Elope in Big Bear

Winter (December to February):

20-45°F, bundle up!

  • Winter in Big Bear means snow! If you’ve ever dreamed of a winter wonderland elopement, this is your season. Big Bear is also a ski destination, so if you want to hit the slopes as part of your elopement adventure, winter is perfect.
  • Pros:
    • Snowy landscape for cozy, romantic photos
    • Great for couples who love skiing or snowboarding
  • Cons:
    • Roads can be icy (don’t forget your snow chains)
    • Crowds at the ski resorts

Spring (April-May):

40-65°F, with chilly mornings and evenings

  • Spring in Big Bear can be unpredictable. There’s usually still some snow sticking around until late April, but May offers warmer weather and blooming wildflowers. If you want to avoid crowds, eloping in the spring could be a great option.
  • Pros:
    • Less crowded than summer and winter
    • Beautiful wildflowers and snow-capped peaks
  • Cons:
    • Snow might still be around, especially at higher elevations
    • Trails could be muddy or snow-covered

Summer (June-August):

60-85°F during the day, cooler in the mornings and evenings

  • Summer in Big Bear means sunshine, blue skies, and warm temperatures. If you love hiking and being outdoors, this is the season for you.
  • Pros:
    • Best weather for outdoor activities like hiking or paddleboarding
    • Plenty of daylight for photos and exploring
  • Cons:
    • Crowded, especially on weekends
    • Can get hot during midday (bring water!)

Fall (September-November):

50-75°F, cooler in the mornings and evenings

  • Fall is one of my favorite times for a Big Bear elopement! The weather cools down, the leaves change color, and there are fewer tourists. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the beautiful fall foliage.
  • Pros:
    • Gorgeous fall colors (especially in September and October)
    • Fewer crowds compared to summer
    • Comfortable temperatures for hiking and outdoor ceremonies
  • Cons:
    • Weather can be unpredictable in late fall, with possible early snow

How to Legally Get Married to Elope in Big Bear

How to Get a Marriage License

Before your Big Bear elopement, you’ll need to pick up a marriage license. Here’s how to get your marriage license in California:

  1. Visit the County Clerk’s Office
    • The closest County Clerk’s office is located in San Bernardino. The address is 222 West Hospitality Lane, San Bernardino, CA 92415. They’re open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and you’ll need to show up together.
  2. Bring Valid Identification
    • Both of you will need to bring valid ID, like a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. You’ll present these when you apply, and since both parties have to be present to sign the paperwork, make sure you plan a trip together to the office.
  3. Complete the Application
    • Once you arrive, you’ll fill out the marriage license application. The form is pretty simple, and the staff there can assist you if you have any questions along the way.
  4. Pay the Fee
    • In San Bernardino County, the cost for a marriage license is $89. Be sure to bring a payment method with you. While many offices accept cash, credit, or debit, it’s a good idea to confirm what’s accepted beforehand.
  5. Receive Your Marriage License
    • Once the application is complete and the fee is paid, you’re good to go! You’ll leave with your marriage license, which is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
  6. Have a Witness and Officiant
    • For your ceremony, California requires at least one witness. The officiant and your witness(es) will need to sign the license after the ceremony. If you don’t have a witness, I can help you find one! And since I’m an ordained officiant, I can also perform your ceremony if needed.

As of now, Big Bear doesn’t require a permit for elopements, which makes planning super easy. However, it’s always good to check with local authorities in case that changes.
