Adventurous Couples Photos at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind spot for post-elopement photos, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley is hard to beat. There’s something about standing in the middle of endless rolling dunes, surrounded by nothing but open space, that makes it feel like another world. It’s quiet, remote, and perfect for couples who want a fun, laid-back session after their elopement.

That’s exactly what A and M wanted. After their sunrise elopement at Artist’s Palette, they decided to wrap up their day with an adventure at the dunes—barefoot, relaxed, and completely in the moment. Their session was full of laughter, movement, and genuine connection, and I’m excited to share their story along with some tips for your own couples photos at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

A and M’s Post-Elopement Session

I first met A and M for their sunrise elopement ceremony at Artist’s Palette. The bright colors of the canyon made for an incredible setting, but after an early morning wake-up call, we were all ready for a break. After a much-needed nap and outfit change, we met up later in the day at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes for a more relaxed, playful session.

This time, A and M ditched their wedding attire and opted for comfortable, casual clothes—perfect for running through the sand. As we wandered across the dunes, it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The wind had smoothed over the sand, leaving behind untouched ridges and ripples, making it the perfect setting for their couples photos at Mesquite Flats.

The Experience at Mesquite Flats

One of the best things about Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is how remote and peaceful it feels, especially if you go at the right time. For A and M, this meant complete privacy—giving them the freedom to be themselves, have fun, and focus on each other.

They ran, rolled, and even playfully wrestled in the sand, and it made for some of my favorite photos of the day. These sessions don’t need to feel like “posing” for the camera—the best moments happen when you’re just enjoying the experience.

Between the golden light, the untouched dunes, and the way they naturally fit together, this session was a perfect reminder that post-elopement photos can be just as meaningful as the ceremony itself.

Tips for Your Couples Photos at Mesquite Flats

Timing is Everything

Early morning and sunset are the best times to be at the dunes. The light is softer, the temperatures are cooler, and you’re more likely to have the place to yourself. Winter and early spring are the most comfortable times to visit Death Valley.

Dress Comfortably

You don’t need formal outfits to get amazing photos here. The sand moves with every step, so wear something you can move freely in. I usually kick off my shoes while trekking through the dunes—it feels way better, and it keeps my shoes from turning into sandbags.

Bring Essentials

Death Valley is no joke when it comes to the elements. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and maybe even a hat for breaks between shots. The sand heats up fast, so if you’re visiting in warmer months, closed-toe shoes can help protect your feet.

Make it Fun

The best photos come from real moments, so don’t be afraid to let loose. Run up a dune, dance, wrestle, lay back and look at the sky—whatever feels like you. Those are the shots that will mean the most.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is one of the best places in Death Valley for couples photos, whether you’re celebrating your elopement or just want an adventurous session together. If you’re thinking about doing your own couples photos at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, I’d love to help plan an experience that feels fun, natural, and totally unique to you.
