17 Best Places to Elope in Yosemite National Park

If you’re thinking about eloping in Yosemite National Park, you’re in for an adventure. This place has everything- towering granite mountains, lush meadows, and iconic landmarks. It’s no wonder why so many couples choose Yosemite as their elopement destination. But with so many beautiful spots, it can be tough to decide where to say “I do.” Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into the best places to elope in Yosemite.

Why Elope in Yosemite?

First, let’s talk about why Yosemite is a great place to elope. As someone who’s spent a lot of time photographing here, I can tell you it’s not just about the beautiful views (though they’re definitely a bonus). Yosemite has a kind of magic that’s hard to explain.

When you’re standing next to a giant sequoia tree or watching the sun dip behind El Capitan, you really feel connected to nature- and to each other. Plus, there’s something freeing about saying your vows in a place that’s so wild and open.

Yosemite also gives you a lot of flexibility. You can hike to a remote spot for a quiet, private ceremony, or you can choose a more accessible location if you’ve got guests or want something a little easier. No matter what you’re looking for, Yosemite has a place that’ll fit your vibe.

When to Elope in Yosemite

Before diving into the locations, let’s chat about timing. Yosemite is beautiful year-round, but the best time to elope depends on what you’re hoping for.

  • Spring: The waterfalls are roaring, and everything is lush and green. It’s a great time if you love wildflowers, but some areas might still have snow (Glacier Road is closed usually until June), so keep that in mind.
  • Summer: This is the most popular time, which means more people, but also warmer weather and access to all areas of the park. If you don’t mind an early start, you can still find some quiet spots.
  • Fall: The colors are amazing, and the crowds thin out a bit. It’s cooler, but not too cold, making it a sweet spot for many couples.
  • Winter: If you’re up for a winter wonderland, Yosemite is stunning in the snow. Just be prepared for road closures and limited access to some areas.

Best Places to Elope in Yosemite

Now, onto the best places to elope in Yosemite. These are a few of my favorites, but remember, the best spot is the one that feels right for you.

Yosemite Valley Floor Elopement Locations

El Capitan Meadow

A couple holds hands while walking through a El Capitan Meadow in Yosemite National Park with towering trees and granite cliffs in the background.

El Capitan Meadow is one of my top picks for elopements. It’s a large, open space with a perfect view of El Capitan, the massive granite monolith that Yosemite is famous for. The meadow is usually pretty quiet, so you can enjoy some privacy, even during peak season.

The best part? You don’t have to hike far to get there, which is great if you have guests or if you’re not looking to work up a sweat before your ceremony.

El Capitan Viewpoint

A wide view of El Capitan and other granite formations in Yosemite National Park reflected in the calm waters of a nearby river.

If you want El Capitan to be front and center in your photos, this is the spot for you. This viewpoint offers a different perspective compared to the meadow, giving you a close-up view of the granite wall. It’s easily accessible by car, making it a convenient option if you’re not up for a hike but still want those iconic Yosemite vibes.

Yosemite Falls

Bridalveil Fall flows between granite cliffs, framed by tall trees in Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite Falls is one of the most iconic spots in the park. As one of the tallest waterfalls in North America, it’s hard to beat the dramatic backdrop it provides. The falls are especially powerful in the spring when the snowmelt is at its peak, but they’re beautiful year-round. Prepare to get wet if planning to visit during the spring!

Cathedral Beach

Cathedral Beach is a peaceful spot along the Merced River with an incredible view of Cathedral Rocks. It’s a quieter spot compared to some of the other locations in the park, which makes it perfect for a more intimate ceremony. The beach area is sandy, and the reflection of Cathedral Rocks in the water is simply beautiful. It’s also a great spot for a picnic after your ceremony.

Cook’s Meadow

Yosemite Falls cascades down a steep granite cliff into a valley with a fallen log and grassy meadow in the foreground.

Located in the heart of Yosemite Valley, Cook’s Meadow offers stunning views of both Half Dome and Yosemite Falls. The meadow is particularly beautiful in the spring when it’s lush and green, but it’s a lovely spot year-round.

Sentinel Beach

A serene riverside scene in Yosemite Valley, with towering granite cliffs and a forest of trees reflected in the still water.

Sentinel Beach is another fantastic riverside location for your elopement. This are is less crowded than some of the other spots in the park, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a bit more privacy.

Yosemite Chapel

If you’re looking for a mix of tradition and nature, the Yosemite Chapel is a great choice. It’s the oldest building in Yosemite, surrounded by cliffs and trees. The chapel itself is small and simple, but that’s part of its charm.

Wawona Road Elopement Locations

Tunnel View

If you’ve been pinning Yosemite inspo for your elopement, you’ve likely saved a picture of Tunnel View. It’s one of the most iconic viewpoints in Yosemite. Tunnel View offers a breathtaking panorama of Yosemite Valley, including El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall.

It’s one of the first views you see when entering the park from the south, and it’s a perfect spot for an elopement if you want that classic Yosemite postcard look. Because it’s a popular spot, I recommend planning your ceremony for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Tioga Pass Road Elopement Locations

Tenaya Lake

A couple embraces on the shore of Tenaya Lake in Yosemite National Park, with surrounding granite mountains reflected in the water.

Tenaya Lake is a crystal-clear lake located on Tioga Pass Road. The lake is accessible by car, and there are plenty of spots around the shore to choose from for your elopement portraits.

Olmsted Point

A couple, holding hands and facing away from the camera, looks out at the sunset-lit Half Dome and surrounding granite landscape in Yosemite National Park.

A truly underrated and hidden gem, yet one of the best places to elope in Yosemite. Olmsted Point gives you a unique perspective of Yosemite, with views of Tenaya Canyon and the backside of Half Dome. It’s located along the Tioga Pass Road, and it’s a great spot if you want a less traditional view of Yosemite’s iconic landmarks.

Glacier Point Road Elopement Locations

Taft Point

A rocky ledge overlooking Yosemite Valley with El Capitan in the distance under a clear sky.

If you’re looking for a spot with a little more edge (literally), Taft Point is the place to be. Taft Point has sweeping views of Yosemite Valley and some wild cliffs that make for dramatic photos. The hike to Taft Point is just over a mile, and it’s not too difficult, so it’s accessible for most people.

One thing to keep in mind is that Taft Point can be pretty windy, so be prepared for that. But if you’re up for it, this spot is hard to beat. Keep in mind you’ll be right up against massive drops, so if you’re really terrified of heights, I wouldn’t recommend this area.

Washburn Point

Washburn Point is the quieter alternative to Glacier Point. It offers an equally impressive view of Half Dome, Vernal Fall, and Nevada Fall, but with way fewer crowds. This makes it a great spot for your elopement if you want a panoramic view without the business of Glacier Point.

Glacier Point

A sunset view of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park with a dramatic sky of clouds and pastel colors.

Glacier Point is by far one of the best places to elope in Yosemite. From here, you can see Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and even the High Sierra and glaciers in the distance.

It’s a bit of a drive to get there (about an hour from Yosemite Valley), but the view is 100% worth it. Glacier Point is one of the more popular spots in Yosemite, so I recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid crowds.

If you’re trying to decide whether to visit Glacier Point at sunrise or sunset, here’s my take: I prefer sunset when the golden light is hitting the valley behind you. At sunrise, the sun will be coming up behind you and can sometimes create a washed out look. If you’re into moody, sunset is the way to go.

Big Oak Flat Road Elopement Locations

Sentinel Dome

Sentinel Dome is another hidden gem for elopements. It’s less crowded than some of the more popular spots, and the 360-degree views from the top are incredible. You can see El Capitan, Half Dome, and even the Sierra Nevada mountains. The hike to Sentinel Dome is about 2.2 miles round trip, and it’s a relatively easy hike. I recommend going for a sunset elopement here- the light is amazing, and you’ll have the place mostly to yourselves.

Merced Grove

By Martin Jambon

If you’re a fan of giant sequoias, Merced Grove is the spot for you. It’s one of the smaller and less visited sequoia groves in Yosemite, which means it’s perfect for a quiet and intimate elopement. The grove is about a 1.5-mile hike from the trailhead, but the walk through the towering trees is worth it.

Hetch Hetchy Road Elopement Locations

Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

A view of Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park, with a calm lake surrounded by steep granite cliffs under a clear blue sky

Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is the least visited area of Yosemite National Park. The reservoir is surrounded by granite cliffs and waterfalls, and it’s a great spot if you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path location for your elopement.

Wapama Falls

Wapama Falls is located in the Hetch Hetchy area, and it’s one of the most powerful waterfalls in Yosemite. The hike to Wapama Falls is about 5 miles round trip, but it’s worth the effort if you’re looking for a more adventurous elopement location. The falls are especially impressive in the spring and early summer when they’re at their fullest.

Tips for Eloping in Yosemite

A wide open grassy meadow in Yosemite National Park with towering cliffs and trees under a partly cloudy sky.
  • Plan ahead: Yosemite is one of the most popular national parks, so make sure to plan your elopement well in advance. This includes getting the necessary permits and booking any accommodations close to a year in advance.
  • Consider the season: Yosemite is super crowded in the summer, and some spots are only accessible in certain seasons. Think about what’s most important to you- do you want snow, fall colors, or spring wildflowers?
  • Respect the park: Make sure you’re following Leave No Trace principles. Stay on designated trails, pack out all your trash, follow the speed limit (please protect wildlife) and leave the park as beautiful as you found it.
  • Permits: You’ll need a wedding permit to elope in Yosemite, so be sure to apply early. The process is pretty straightforward, but it’s a must.
  • Timing: To avoid crowds, consider eloping early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Not only will you get better light for photos, but you’ll also have more privacy.

Yosemite National Park offers some of the best places to elope in California. Whether you want a spot with sweeping views, a quiet meadow, or a historic chapel, Yosemite has it all. The key is to choose a location that feels right for you. If you’re drawn to adventure and the outdoors, you’ll find that Yosemite is the perfect place to start your next chapter together.
