Mormon Rocks Elopement Portraits

If you’re planning a laid-back elopement somewhere that looks like another planet (but is still in Southern California), you might want to check out Mormon Rocks. This place has a weird, cool energy to it with massive rock formations popping up right out of the ground. It’s not as crowded as the big national parks and still gives you that outdoor, adventurous feel. If you’re searching for real-life examples of a Mormon Rocks elopement, you’re in the right spot.

Second Look, New Vibe

KP and RJ had their ceremony earlier that day in the Angeles National Forest. Then we met up and headed out to Mormon Rocks for part two of their elopement photos. This spot is easy to access, located off Highway 138 near Cajon Pass. It’s in the San Bernardino National Forest, which means you don’t need to hike miles in to get something epic.

KP changed into her second outfit when we got there. She wore a vintage wedding dress she’d thrifted—and honestly, it was perfect. Lightweight, easy to move in, and fit the desert setting like it was meant for it. RJ stayed in his outfit from earlier, and together they had such a relaxed vibe. This is your reminder: your elopement doesn’t need to follow any rules. Want two outfits? Go for it. Want a thrifted look that no one else has? Even better.

How We Used the Space

It was hot—like, California desert in the summer hot. But we found pockets of shade tucked into the curves of the rocks. We followed a small trail that winds through the area, stopping to take photos where the light hit just right. No need for anything overly posed. These two just walked, laughed, and enjoyed the moment.

After a short walk, they crossed the road to a quiet, open spot for their first dance. They popped in a shared set of headphones—each with one earbud—and danced to their song. It was one of my favorite moments from the whole day. No one else around. No music blasting. Just the two of them swaying quietly, half smiling, half crying. It’s stuff like this that reminds me why I love being an elopement photographer.

The Sign + The Name

Before we wrapped up, KP and RJ brought out a wooden sign with their new last name on it. Here’s the cool part—they made it up themselves. They combined parts of both of their last names to create a brand new one. I thought that was such a fun way to start a new chapter. It felt personal, like they were writing

Why Mormon Rocks Works for Elopements

  • It’s accessible: You don’t need to hike far or get a permit if it’s just the two of you and your photographer. (Always double-check with the San Bernardino National Forest office for the latest guidelines.)
  • It’s quiet: You won’t run into big crowds here like you would at Yosemite or Joshua Tree.
  • The views are cool and weird in the best way. If you want something different, this is it.
  • It’s close to LA: About 1.5–2 hours from the city depending on traffic, so it works great for a half-day elopement or adventure session.

Tips for a Mormon Rocks Elopement

  • Time of day matters: Sunrise and sunset will give you better light and cooler temps.
  • Wear sunscreen and bring water: Even in the shade, it gets hot fast.
  • Watch for traffic: It’s right off the highway, so be extra careful when crossing.
  • Cell service is spotty: Download your maps and send your location to someone before you go.
